The bishop began this month’s pastoral activities in the Unción del Espíritu Santo Community in Santiago Atitlán.
During the bishop’s visit, twenty-two children made their first Reconciliation and their Solemn Communion.  All had been beautifully prepared by the community catechists.
In the homily, the bishop urged all the participants to renew their spiritual life constantly, consciously and continually taking on the attitude of devotion and repentance as a witness to their life of faith.
Also during this visit several children were initiated into Christian Life.
The children who made their Solemn Communion accepted the commitment to be the living presence of the light of Christ in whatever situation they found themselves. This commitment was symbolized by lighting a candle after receiving communion.

SEPTEMBER 5.  DIVINE LITURGY IN THE SEMINARY IN HONOR OF THE BIRTH OF THE VIRGIN MARY

On Wednesday, September 5, the birth of the Most Holy Virgin Mary was celebrated using the Divine Liturgy.
In the homily the bishop stressed that Most Holy Mary, as our mother and model, should be invoked and imitated so that we may fulfill fully the mission that the Lord has entrusted to us.
One of the especially attractive aspects of the celebration of the Divine Liturgy is that it uses leavened bread. Knowing that Jesus expressly wanted to celebrate the last meal with leavened bread—“living bread”—a material symbol of the spiritual reality of the Eucharist, makes celebration with this bread particularly significant and relevant.
This Divine Liturgy constitutes the spiritual preparation for the seminarians’ vacation. It begins Saturday, September 8, and on September 16, when the final bi-semester of the academic and pastoral year begins.

SEPTEMBER 8.  THE ROLE OF THE VIRGIN MARY IN A RADIO BROADCAST FROM LOS ANGELES

On Saturday, September 8, the feast of the Birth of the Blessed virgin Mary, the bishop participated, by invitation, in a radio broadcast from Studio Three of Radio Nueva Vida, located in Los Angeles, California.

The theme was the role of Most Holy Mary in evangelism.

In the broadcast, the bishop emphasized that Mary’s attitude, lifestyle, and mission make her a model of the evangelist and evangelism.

In the first place, she received the Gospel in herself, which is the living presence of Christ, by action of the Holy Spirit, and then she delivered it to humanity, showing that in Him all the ancient promises were fulfilled.

This should also be the dynamic and mission of every evangelist.

In the afternoon of September 8, Monsignor Eduardo presided at the Eucharistic celebration with the San Miguel Arcángel Parish, which meets at 227 W. Jefferson in Los Angeles.
The liturgy that was celebrated was that of the Birth of the Most Holy Virgin. In light of the prophecies of Micah and St. Matthew’s narrative of the incarnation, the bishop emphasized that God’s promise is being fulfilled, without interruption, in history, though it involves believers like Mary and Joseph in becoming manifest and evident to everyone.

The parish community, in spite of some difficulties that they have gone through, feels excited about continuing to work and carry the evangelism process forward more systematically.

The bishop ended the celebration by inviting the People of God to participate in the education program of DETYM, which takes place one Sunday morning each month.

In the evening of September 8, Monsignor Eduard presided at the Eucharist with the Restauración en el Espíritu Santo Community, which meets on Third Street and Carondonet in Los Angeles, California.

In light of the readings for the day, the homily emphasized, that hearing the Word of God cannot be limited to just reading the Holy Scripture, for we have to be spiritually open to hearing the living voice of God that speaks directly to the heart of every believer.  He therefore urged everyone, as in the Gospel, to ask the Lord who made the deaf  to hear to heal our spiritual deafness so that we may hear His voice.

In an atmosphere of deep spirituality and joy, the bread and wine were offered that they may be transformed, by the Holy Spirit, into the Body and Blood of the Lord.

SEPTEMBER 9.  THE MEANING OF CATHOLICITY AND ORTHODOXY IN DETYM, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

For four hours on the morning of September 9, the bishop gave instruction to the People of God of DETYM Los Angeles. The theme was the original meaning of the terms “Catholic” and “Orthodox” and the use of these in the course of the Church’s history.

The entire class was broadcast through Radio Carisma, la Voz del Espíritu Santo, in the Glorificación de María Parish, in Santa Cruz Barillas.

The members of the class had many question for the bishop, which he answered in detail so that by clearing up the various concerns they might have an accurate knowledge of the historical origins of the Church.

Among the issues that the bishop stressed was the fact that the only ones who have historically conserved the fullness of the catholic, apostolic, and orthodox faith—that is, faith in its entirety, which was transmitted by the apostles and the early Church Fathers— are the Syriac-Orthodox of Antioch, the Coptic Orthodox of Alexandria, and Armenian Orthodox.

This fact prompts us to draw close to these churches.

SEPTEMBER 9.  MASS WITH THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE DETYM EDUCATION PROGRAM, LOS ANGELES

On Sunday afternoon, September 9, the bishop presided at the Eucharist in which those who attend the DETYM session participated.

The celebration was broadcast by Radio Carisma of Santa Cruz Barillas.

In light of the readings from the prophet Isaiah, who announces the messianic times, and the Gospel of Mark, which, in the passage telling of the healing of the deaf-mute, presents Jesus to us as the one who fulfills these promises, the bishop explained the symbolic meaning of these miracles.

The miracles are a symbol of the healing that in Jesus every human being receives in his or her ability to hear the living God and to recognize His presence in everybody. For this reason it is needful to avoid every kind of discrimination and also to proclaim the Good news to everyone.

To conclude, the bishop invited the participants to take seriously the Gospel message and to ask the Lord to open our ears so that we can hear Him, to open our eyes so that we can see Him present in every person and circumstance, especially among the poorest and most marginalized and those in difficulties,  and to loosen our tongues so that we may proclaim that the Kingdom of God has come among us because it is alive and present in our hearts.

A very special moment in the Divine Liturgy is the mixing of the two species and the breaking of the Body.

All the seminarians participated in the celebration with special devotion.

SEPTEMBER 23.  FIRST EUCHARIST AND CHRISTIAN INITIATION IN LA PINADA, SAN PEDRO NECTA

On Sunday, September 23, Monsignor Eduardo went to the village of Pinada, of San Pedro Necta, Huehuetenango.

It was the anniversary of the day when, after several years of prayerful discussion, the members of the community covenanted to belong to the Church.

The celebration began with the administration of the sacrament of Penance, in which a great number of the faithful participated with devotion.

The celebration of the covenant also involved the celebration of Christian Initiation for fourteen children of the members of the community.

In the homily the bishop emphasized that the covenant meant joining the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church that the Lord founded when he sent the Holy Spirit to the apostles on Pentecost, and that now continues to be present in our midst when we maintain its complete identity and characteristics.

After the fourteen children who were initiated into Christian Life received Holy Communion, many of the faithful present also communed. Nevertheless, it needs to be noted that a great deal of pastoral work is still needed in order that all the new members may be able to participate fully in the sacramental life.
